How to Do a Freestyle Flip Turn: Safe Learning Steps

Learn freestyle flip-turn basics: approach, somersault, foot placement, push-off, rotation and breakout, with safe pool-depth precautions.

Key point

A flip turn is a compact forward somersault followed by feet on the wall and a streamlined push-off. Learn the rotation away from the wall first, then add the approach under supervision.

Build the rotation

In suitable water, tuck the chin, exhale through the nose and bring the knees towards the chest so the hips travel over. Avoid throwing the head back or holding the breath.

Approach the wall

Use a consistent final stroke and begin the turn at a distance that places the feet securely—not the lower back—against the wall. The correct distance varies with speed and body length.

Plant and push

Place both feet about hip-width apart with knees bent, push into a tight streamline, then rotate towards the front before the breakout. Do not twist during the somersault just to face down early.

Integrate gradually

  1. Somersault in open water.
  2. Somersault and find a stationary target.
  3. Approach from a few strokes away.
  4. Add push-off and controlled breakout.
  5. Practise at normal training speed only after consistency.

Check depth and lane conditions

Practise only where turns are permitted, with enough clearance and supervision. Stop for dizziness, neck pain or disorientation.

Technique source

Swim England’s swimming terminology guide describes tumble turns as underwater somersaults used in freestyle and backstroke to push away from the wall. The progression above adds explicit depth, orientation and supervision limits for beginners.

Common questions

Should a beginner learn a flip turn in deep water?

Start only where a qualified instructor has assessed the swimmer, depth and traffic. Practise individual parts beside a safe wall before combining speed and rotation.

Do I need to breathe during the somersault?

Do not inhale during the rotation. Use a controlled exhale, complete the turn without prolonged breath holding and surface before control is lost.

Why does my flip turn finish crooked?

Common causes include rotating off-centre, placing the feet unevenly or twisting too early. Slow the sequence and correct one part at a time with external feedback.
