How to Tread Water: Techniques and Safe Progressions

Learn the foundations of treading water using body position, sculling and leg actions, with safe beginner progressions and important limits.

Key point

Treading water combines an upright body position, continuous hand sculling, a sustainable leg action and calm breathing. Learn in supervised water where you can return to the wall or stand; do not test endurance alone.

Find a stable position

Keep the head comfortably above water, chest upright and hips beneath the shoulders. Excessive leaning or frantic lifting wastes energy. Use a relaxed breath rather than holding it.

Use the hands to scull

With elbows bent and hands in front of the body, sweep the forearms and hands gently side to side, changing the angle so water pressure supports both directions. Avoid large downward pushes followed by a long pause.

Choose a leg action

Beginners may start with alternating kicks or a breaststroke-style action. The eggbeater kick can provide continuous support but needs separate coordination practice. No single action is best for every learner.

Progress safely

  1. Rehearse the hand and leg patterns at the wall.
  2. Combine them for a few seconds beside a secure support.
  3. Increase time only while breathing and control remain calm.
  4. Practise signalling and moving back to the wall.

Treading is not a guarantee of survival

Cold, clothing, waves, fatigue and injury change the task. Wear the appropriate lifejacket for the activity and never use a treading-water test as permission to swim alone.

Safety source

The American Red Cross water-competency guidance includes floating or treading water for at least one minute as one part of a broader five-skill sequence. It also says to know your limits, avoid swimming alone and adjust for the water environment.

Common questions

Which leg action should a beginner use to tread water?

There is no single best action for everyone. Alternating kicks or a breaststroke-style action may be easier first; eggbeater can give continuous support but usually needs separate coordination practice.

How long should a beginner practise treading water?

Start with only a few controlled seconds beside a wall or secure support. Increase time gradually while breathing and body control remain calm, under appropriate supervision.

Does being able to tread water make it safe to swim alone?

No. Treading ability changes with fatigue, clothing, cold, waves and injury. Never use it as permission to swim alone or enter conditions beyond an assessed ability.
