SwimSafer Assessment: What Parents and Swimmers Can Expect
How a SwimSafer assessment generally works, including registration, reporting, skill stations, clothing, results and what to do after an unsuccessful attempt.
Key point
An assessment checks whether the swimmer can demonstrate the current stage requirements under the stated conditions. Confirm the venue, reporting time, clothing and equipment in the official notice; normal lesson attendance does not guarantee a pass.
Before assessment day
Verify the participant details, stage, venue, date and reporting time. Read the latest instructions rather than relying on a previous test. Pack the required swimwear, goggles and stage-specific clothing described in the notice.
At registration and briefing
Arrive early enough to find the facility and change without rushing. Staff may verify identity or registration and explain movement between stations. The swimmer should listen for safety and lane instructions.
During the assessment
Tasks may cover entries, strokes, survival skills, clothed activity and sequence completion. Assessors evaluate the published criteria, so adding an unrequested trick or using a different technique can create problems.
If weather or health interrupts
Follow the organiser’s rescheduling process. A swimmer who is ill, injured or medically unfit should not attempt to “push through” merely to avoid another date.
After the result
A non-pass identifies skills that were not yet demonstrated; it is not a judgement of the child. Ask for the specific criterion, practise it safely with the instructor and retest only when ready.
Clothed and deep-water tasks need supervision
Do not rehearse them alone. Clothing increases resistance, and rescue-related tasks must not be turned into unsupervised play.

Common questions
What must a participant complete to receive a SwimSafer e-certificate?
The participant must successfully complete the practical assessment and the online theory quiz for the relevant stage. Check the current CAMS instructions for registration, timing and equipment requirements.
Can a parent register a private assessment without coach validation?
No. Sport Singapore states that registrations made by participants or parents must be validated by the recognised SwimSafer coach tagged to the participant.
