Swim Nappies and Pool Hygiene: What Parents Need to Know

How swim nappies work, why they are not leak-proof, when to change them and when babies or toddlers should stay out of the pool.

Key point

Swim nappies may contain solid stool briefly, but they are not leak-proof and do not stop diarrhoea germs entering pool water. Check them frequently, change away from poolside and keep any child with diarrhoea out of the water.

What a swim nappy does

Unlike an ordinary disposable nappy, it is designed not to swell heavily in water. A snug fit can help contain solid stool for a short time, but germs and liquid can still escape.

Check the venue’s nappy rule first

ActiveSG’s current swimming-complex rules list diapers among attire not permitted in the pool and do not state a swim-nappy exception. Before visiting an ActiveSG pool, ask the specific venue and lesson provider what is accepted. Other pools may set different nappy and outer-cover requirements.

Before the pool

  • Follow the facility’s reusable or disposable nappy and outer-cover rules.
  • Choose a snug leg and waist fit without painful marks.
  • Bring spares, wipes, disposal bags and dry nappies.
  • Use the designated changing area.

During and after

Check nappies frequently—CDC guidance suggests about every 60 minutes—and take regular bathroom breaks for toilet-trained children. Change away from the water and wash hands with soap and water afterwards.

Diarrhoea and swimming do not mix

Do not put a child with diarrhoea in any pool, even with double nappies. Follow healthcare and facility advice about when it is safe to return.

Common questions

Do swim nappies stop urine or diarrhoea from entering the pool?

No. Swim nappies are not leak-proof. They may contain solid stool briefly, but they do not reliably contain urine or diarrhoea germs. A child with diarrhoea should not enter the pool.

Where and when should a swim nappy be changed?

Check it frequently and change it in the designated changing area, away from the pool. Dispose of waste correctly, wash hands with soap and water, and follow the facility’s nappy and outer-cover rules.

Does ActiveSG allow swim nappies in its pools?

ActiveSG’s published swimming-complex rules list diapers among attire not permitted in the pool and do not state a swim-nappy exception. Ask the specific venue and lesson provider before visiting; do not assume a general swim-nappy recommendation overrides the facility’s rules.
