Showering Before and After Swimming: What to Do and Why

Why pools ask swimmers to shower first, what rinsing afterwards does, and practical tips for lessons.

Short answer

Many Singapore pools expect you to shower before entering, and it is good pool manners. Showering afterwards removes pool water from skin and hair. Check the rules posted at your pool.

Before swimming

A quick shower removes sweat, sunscreen and dirt that would otherwise end up in the pool. It also helps pool etiquette and hygiene. See pool etiquette and sun protection.

After swimming

Rinsing helps remove pool chemicals from skin and hair. Dry your ears gently, and see swimmer's ear if you have ear trouble. Dry off and dress quickly if you feel cold. See feeling cold.

Practical points

  • Follow the venue's rules and signs on showers and toilets.
  • Use the toilet before the lesson, especially for children.
  • Babies and toddlers need a swim nappy. See swim nappies and hygiene.
  • If your skin or eyes get irritated, rinse well and tell the coach. Seek medical advice if it continues.
